Web Security
If your website requests your customers to submit personal information using web based forms or allowing them to purchase products from your website, we strongly suggest that you secure your website using SSL encryption.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a transaction security standard that provides data encryption, server authentication, and message integrity. SSL is usually used on sites that accept credit card numbers or other private information.
SSL is frequently used on web pages to protect sensitive information. However, not all web pages use it correctly. It is fairly easy to include SSL on a web page such that the information is not protected at all. It is not very simple to verify that a SSL implementation is really effective. This page tries to present a way to check that should yield accurate results in most situations. SSL basically encrypts information transferred between your computer and the server to prevent anyone monitoring the communications links from grabbing your user id, password, name, address, and other personal information you would rather not appear in public.
There are two commonly used SSL encryption schemes: 40 bit keys and 128 bit keys. The encryption key size determines the effort required to break the encryption. Larger keys take more work to break.
How do I know if my website is SSL encrypted?
For a web page that requests you to enter sensitive information you need to evaluate it to determine if SSL is being used properly to protect the information. The key is the page in which you enter the information, not the page that shows after you have entered the information. Browsers will generally show you if the page is protected by SSL. The first thing to check is the URL for the page. If it begins with HTTP: then it is not protected by SSL. It must begin with HTTPS: to be protected. The second thing to check is the browser's view of security. Generally browsers will show you by the use of the image of a lock. Unlocked means no SSL. Locked means SSL is used.
